“Rajasthan is the pillar of light that attracts travelers with its rich art and culture”

Nostalgia Rajasthan Rajasthan with its deep-rooted culture and traditions boasts of a rich culture with a story around every corners. My art and story in this new painting series is about the artistic people of this land, the art found in the rural areas, in their attire, architecture, bazaars and rituals. I connect so well with the people of this land who incorporate colors into their daily lives, the turbans and sarees they use to decorate every facet of their lives. They follow the age-old traditions spanning thousands of years and I am mesmerized with the whole rainbow of colors they use in their daily lives. Celebration of the festival of colors with this release of paintings: I travelled to Rajasthan for the first time in 2016 and was bowled over. The rich traditions, friendly people and the delicious cuisine inspired me to create these art works. I have tried my best to stay away from the glitz and glamour as portrayed in our movies but have traced art among the people in the rural and semi urban hinterland. I have mostly used my original photographs and composed and painted my art works in acrylics. These are on stretched canvas but I can unstretch them and transport them to my art lovers. I found great pleasure to learn Pichwai paintings from Nathdwara, made on cloth peppered with a thin mixture of flour and colored with dyes crushed from natural stones. The Kathputli puppets show, which is about 1,500 years old, uses wooden puppets all handmade and made to dance on traditional songs sung by local musicians using traditional instruments. The Ghoomar dance, the traditional dance of the Bhil tribe to worship the Goddess Saraswati has been ranked fourth in the “Top 10 local dances around the world” in 2013. The traditional movement of the dancers is a part of their wedding ritual and they dance with gay abandon and grace as the handmade skirts flair slowly. My painting does not show the dancers with heavy jewelry or make-up, instead it shows their natural beauty and their colorful attire is highlighted synchronized with the musician in the foreground. The particular miniatures produced by Indian artists in their own style is known as Rajput or Rajasthani miniature. These paintings are done with utmost care mostly with brushed made of squirrel tail hairs, in minute details with strong lines and bold colors set in harmonious patterns. I have created an acrylic painting on the divine love of Radha and Krishna set in the midst of a mythical and a beautiful garden of Vrindavan. In the book ‘Gita Govinda’ by poet Jayadev, composed in the 12’th century there is a description of the relationship between Krishna and Radha. There is an ancient tradition in Rajasthan to decorate the camels for branding of ownership so that the owner can recognize his camels from others in a fair like Pushkar. The Pushkar camel fair is changing from market to heritage attraction. The owners use fabric with mirror works, embroidery, macramé, murals and garlands of flowers to showcase their animals and take a lot of pride in their ownership. This ancient tradition of the holy town of Pushkar intrigued me to make a painting of the same.
