Nandi, also revered as Nandīśvara or Nandideva, is the sacred bull and vahana (mount) of Lord Shiva in Hindu tradition. More than a mere vehicle, Nandi is regarded as the steadfast guardian of Mount Kailash, Shiva’s celestial abode. His seated stone form—calm, alert, and ever-devoted—is a near-universal presence at the entrance of Shiva temples, always positioned to gaze directly upon the sanctum. The name ‘Nandi’ derives from the Sanskrit word for joy, happiness, and contentment—qualities that reflect his role as the divine sentinel and ideal devotee. Symbolizing a mind wholly surrendered to the Absolute, Nandi's image transcends regional boundaries, appearing in temple architecture from India to Southeast Asia, including Cambodia. In stepwells dedicated to Shiva, Nandi's presence reaffirms the sacred geometry of space and devotion. His enduring gaze upon the deity is both a spiritual gesture and a reminder of the stillness required to perceive the divine.
